built

An anonymous violin, presumably made in France, with a Bohemian scroll and a label reading “Joannes Baptista de Gabrielli Florentius fecit sub sign Cremone 1757.”

History of this instrument

This violin comes from the famous “Max Rodriguez Collection,” which consists of four Italian master instruments and sixteen valuable bows. In 1992, the Rodriguez Collection was loaned to the Musical Instrument Fund. In 1997, the owner decided to donate nearly all of the instruments to our foundation. Old appraisal reports in our archives indicate that this violin was long attributed to G.B. Gabrieli, a highly regarded luthier from Florence. However, later research has shown that this attribution was incorrect, so the violin is now described as an “anonymous violin.” It was likely built in France (Paris), and a different (Bohemian) scroll was later added to the violin. Regardless of its origin or value, it is without a doubt an instrument with exceptional tonal qualities. The violin was played for a very long time by Marin Mars. Later, Mayu Konoe and Gioia Kuipers were the fortunate owners. Currently, the violin is in the hands of Anna Maring.
