An anonymous violin, built in Mirecourt in the late 19th century, with a label reading “Gustave Bernardel, Paris 1892.”

History of this instrument

In 1991, the Musical Instrument Fund received this French violin from a music-loving donor. According to one of the experts we work with, it is an instrument from the school of Grandjon or Gaillard of Mirecourt. Marjolein Boersma was the first to play it; subsequently, the violin was loaned to, among others, Judith van Driel, Heleen Knoop, Josine Jansen, and Jorinde van den Thillart. Azra Rustempašić also enjoyed playing this French violin. Merlijn Bakker is the instrument’s current lucky player.
