A basse de violon bow, made by Luis Emilio Rodriguez Carrington in The Hague, 2018.
History of this instrument
To ensure that the rare basse de violon from our collection, built by Egidius Snoeck (Brussels, ca. 1715), sounds as good as possible, the Musical Instrument Fund, with the help of cellist Viola de Hoog, set out to find the perfect bow. In 2018, they found it: a bow made by Luis Emilio Rodriguez Carrington. The bow is loaned out for projects and has already passed through many hands, including those of Konstanze Waidosch, Anne-Linde Visser, Lucia Swarts, Gideon den Herder, Octavie Dostaler-Lalonde, Blanca Martin Munoz, and Viola de Hoog herself. Anne-Linde Visser on this bow: “It takes a little getting used to when playing—it’s sort of like a small double bass bow. The instrument now has a more focused sound, responds better, and can thus fulfill its bass function much more effectively.”
