built in Amsterdam in 1929

A cello built by Paul Max Möller in Amsterdam, 1929. Opus 119. Length: 75.5 cm.

History of this instrument

In 1997, the Musical Instrument Fund was very fortunate to be able to purchase this cello from Cornélie Möller, the widow of Berend Möller (grandson of Max I), who had continued the business after her husband’s death. It is the only cello by the “old” Max Möller in the Fund’s collection, which makes it a particularly special piece. Max Möller Sr. enjoyed international renown in his day, and his shop on Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam was constantly bustling with famous musicians from all over the world. Very few cellos made by him exist, and they are highly sought after! The cello was first on loan to Eric de Wit and was played by Jurrian van der Zanden from 1998 to 2025. Currently, Scarlett Waakop Reijers is the lucky owner of the Möller.
