A cello built by Johannes Theodorus Cuypers in The Hague, 1788.

History of this instrument

This cello comes from outside Europe and was added to the collection of the Musical Instrument Fund in 2020. It is the sixth cello by the Cuypers family in the Music Instrument Fund’s collection; five are by the father, Johannes Theodorus Cuypers, and one is by his son, Bernardus Cuypers. What stands out about this cello is the excellent condition of the back and scroll, as well as the unique fact that the original neck and label are still intact. This is a magnificent cello by one of the most important instrument makers in Dutch history. Nicholas Santangelo was the first to play the instrument. Currently, Antonio Pellegrino is the lucky owner.
