cello bow

Pierre Simon

built in Paris in ± 1855

A cello bow, made by Pierre Simon (for J.B. Vuillaume) in Paris, ca. 1850.

History of this instrument

Quirine wrote the following about this herself: “For at least 15 years, I have taken great pleasure in playing with a Pierre Simon bow that I was able to purchase from a colleague at the time. The bow was made around 1855 in Paris, commissioned by J.B. Vuillaume. You can recognize Vuillaume’s influence in the slightly taller and narrower shaft, which gives the bow a very supple playing style. Due to the current coronavirus crisis, which has caused many of my concerts to be canceled, I have, after much deliberation, found myself forced to sell the bow. I am extremely grateful that a wonderful patron crossed my path who was willing to buy the bow and loan it to the Musical Instrument Fund, allowing me to continue playing it. A true ray of hope in these very dark and gloomy times.’

The colleague from whom Quirine Viersen originally purchased the baton had, in turn, bought it from a renowned American dealer.
