An anonymous cello, built in Saxony, with a label reading “Johannes Cuypers.” Body length: 72 cm.

History of this instrument

In 1998, the Musical Instrument Fund received this Baroque cello from Saxony on loan. The cello had always been played by Anneke van Baalen; after she passed away, her partner loaned the cello to us on the condition that it be played only by girls and women. Anneke van Baalen had been active on the board of MVM, a feminist organization founded in 1968 by Hedy d’Ancona and Joke Smit.
Here you can read more about Anneke van Baalen.

Lilian van der Hoeven became the first player after the cello was made available to us. Liesbeth Bosboom and Lidewij Faber also played the instrument, and Anne-Linde Visser became the next player. Currently, Gülce Sucular is the one playing the cello.
