built in ± 1865

A cello, presumably made in England in the 19th century, with a label reading “Antonio Guadagnini, fec Torino 1865.”

History of this instrument

In 1994, the Musical Instrument Fund purchased this unmarked cello from a Dutch luthier. Due to its somewhat smaller size, this cello is ideally suited for (often) young players who are not yet ready for a full-size cello. Job ter Haar was the first to play it; he was followed by Eric de Wit, Eva van de Poll, Ruben van Kruistum, Govert Nijs, Pieter de Koe, and Catarina Távora, among others. Douwe Eisses is the current cellist playing this English cello.
