built in Germany in 1769 (?)

An anonymous (small full-size) cello, made in Germany, with a label reading “Martin Dihl.”

History of this instrument

In 1994, this anonymous German cello was donated to the Musical Instrument Fund by a music-loving donor. Sanne Nieuwenhuijzen has played the cello, as have Claire Beumer and Lidewij Faber. In 2016, the cello was given a Baroque setup; the fingerboard, strings, bridge, and tailpiece were replaced with Baroque versions of these parts. Since 2023, Osian Jones has been the lucky player.
