Update
Cuypers cello:
back to the
player
The transformation is remarkable: all the old touch-ups have been removed and the surface has been repainted with the correct color. After months of restoration, the top is once again in optimal condition. The 250-year-old Cuypers cello, which required extensive restoration, is being reassembled and will soon be brought to the office. A long-awaited moment...
Giorgos Kotsiolis
Since 2015, Greek cellist Giorgos Kotsiolis has been the instrument’s player. For the time being, he is playing a Bernardel cello from Paris, 1865, from the foundation’s collection. He will be the first to try the cello again. It will be an exciting reunion: to what extent has the sound changed? Does that sound still suit Giorgos? Has Giorgos now grown attached to the Bernardel cello?
Thin tabletop
Although in optimal condition, the top remains a bit thin. The top has been without tension for months, so violin maker Hubert de Launay likes to keep a close eye on the cello during the first few weeks. To reduce the pressure on the top, we’re experimenting with different types of strings: the highest quality, but with less tension. We’re incredibly happy that this restoration has yielded such a beautiful result: an important piece of cultural heritage is once again ready for the future. Many of you have contributed to the restoration of the Cuypers cello: thank you very much!
We expect that Giorgos will play the Cuypers cello again for the first time in September. We’ll be sure to update you then!
