Prime Location: Buitenplaats Beeckestijn

Just outside IJmuiden, north of Haarlem, lies the beautiful Buitenplaats Beeckestijn, home to the Netherlands’ first Romantic English garden and a historic country house. The house is now a museum operated by the Hendrik de Keyser Association (admission at a discount). The annex houses a brasserie (offering a discount on lunch). Top musicians from the foundation perform in the fairytale-like coach house. You won’t want to miss this!

In the south

In the South Limburg countryside, near Valkenburg, stands a hermitage with a small 17th-century chapel. Here, Geneviève Verhage (cello) and Merel Junge (violin) retreat to give an intimate concert for up to 40 guests. Repertoire: Bach, Glière, Martinu.

Heading toward Terneuzen in Zeeland, you’ll pass Fort Ellewoutsdijk, which once guarded the shipping route through the Westerschelde. Be sure to check out Consort of Voices, who perform the works of the great masters of the stylus fantasticus on historical instruments.

In the east

The recently restored Mookerheide Hunting Lodge (Art Nouveau) stands proudly on a moraine just south of Nijmegen, surrounded by a beautiful park forest, vegetable garden, historic greenhouses, and fruit-bearing hedges. The “Ludenzaal” serves as the setting for no fewer than 6 concerts featuring a coffee package. Lunch or dinner is served in the new restaurant. How about:

  • Jan Bastiaan Neven, solo cello. Saturday, October 7, 5:30 p.m.

  • Chamber Jazz Consort. Saturday, October 7, 9:00 p.m.

  • Viride Quartet. Sunday, October 8, 11:00 a.m.

  • Merle (harp) & Sarah (flute). Sunday, October 8, 2:00 p.m.

In the north

The Hiemstrastate Estate was the hunting lodge near Hooghalen (Drenthe) belonging to a wealthy man from Rotterdam. A magnificent historic building dating from 1922: stylish avant-garde design, asymmetry, and unique details. In one of the outbuildings, the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio takes the stage to perform their infectious music featuring jazz fortepiano, violone, and whisper percussion.
