Rembrandt Frerichs
and the
Mozart piano
Just like a cherry picker, a piano from Mozart’s era is being delivered to jazz musician Rembrandt Frerichs on the third floor of a building on Newtonstraat in The Hague. The fortepiano was built specifically for Rembrandt and is being provided by the Musical Instrument Fund. The fund is constantly seeking to match musical talent with the right instrument. The Mozart piano was built by Belgian craftsman Chris Maene. Once the piano has been unpacked, Rembrandt will play its first notes, echoing over the rooftops of The Hague. Media representatives are warmly welcome to attend the delivery, handover, and inaugural performance of the piano.
About Rembrandt Frerichs
"Because of my interest in classical music from the Middle East, I’ve always held onto a certain ideal sound that I couldn’t quite find in the modern grand piano. The search for that sound—one that would capture the percussive and short tones of the Iranian santur and the Arabic qanun—led me, via a few detours, to the fortepiano. The problem, however, was that I didn’t have my own instrument and didn’t have the means to purchase one myself. To carry out this project seriously and at a high level, I would need to have a fortepiano at home. That’s what led me to the Musical Instrument Fund."
The purchase of the fortepiano for the Musical Instrument Fund was made possible by the Dioraphte Foundation and private donors.
