Instruments
for
refugees
wanted

Music brings people together, especially in times of change. For refugees, playing an instrument can be not only a way to preserve their cultural identity, but also to breathe new life into their dreams and ambitions. In our search for a variety of musical instruments, we’ve noticed a growing demand for sounds that are less common in the Netherlands, from the saz to the handpan. Your help can make a refugee musician very happy!

Saz, qanun, hang

In our search for instruments for refugees, we are increasingly being asked about instruments that are less common here. We were already somewhat accustomed to the difference between an accordion and a bajan (which is a Ukrainian-style button accordion). We’re now also getting requests for a saz or an ud (both types of lute, common in Turkey and the Arab countries, respectively), and earlier we’d already inquired about a Qanun (resembles a zither, but is actually quite different). Recently, we received a request for a “hang” or handpan. This is a metal percussion instrument that you hold on your lap and play with your hands.

From the attic to the stage: a new home for your instrument

Over the past two years, we’ve noticed that there are violins, guitars, and keyboards sitting in many Dutch attics that were generously donated to us by kind people. Perhaps there are also attics where these instruments can be found, just sitting there unused. A memento of distant travels or a musical career that has taken a different turn. If that’s the case and you’re willing to part with them—just like the donors and lenders of nearly 100 instruments that we’ve been able to match—we’ll find a home for them, and you can make refugee musicians very happy!
