from Michelangelo Bergonzi

Herman Krebbers passed away on Wednesday, May 2. He was 94 years old. Krebbers served as concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for decades and was known worldwide.
In 2005, the Musical Instrument Fund added Krebbers’ violin to its collection. Krebbers played this violin, made by the Italian luthier Bergonzi, for over fifty years. The violin was made in 1741. “When Krebbers stopped playing, we really wanted that violin to stay in the Netherlands,” says director Marcel Schopman. A close friend of Krebbers was violinist Theo Olof, who co-founded the Musical Instrument Fund. The foundation also has in its collection the violin that Olof played for many years. “We always say that Olof and Krebbers are the two greatest Dutch violinists of the last century,” says Marcel Schopman. “It’s truly special to have the instruments of that duo in our collection.”
Krebbers’ violin is on loan to Maria Milstein: “The beautiful Michelangelo Bergonzi violin I play was once owned by Herman Krebbers—Krebbers played countless concerts and made recordings on it. It is a special honor for me to be able to play a violin with such a history."
