About Nesko

The Dutch Student Chamber Orchestra (Nesko) is a project orchestra founded to offer students the opportunity to perform in a chamber orchestra. In addition, the orchestra commissions a new composition each year, giving a young composer the opportunity to work with a large chamber orchestra. For two weeks, the students immerse themselves in the orchestral repertoire: one week is devoted to rehearsals, followed by a week of concerts throughout the Netherlands.

Collaboration

Starting this year, Nesko has been able to temporarily borrow instruments from the collection of the Musical Instrument Fund and showcase them to a wide audience. The selected violins, violas, and cellos are primarily from the collection of contemporary Dutch instrument makers. This collaboration not only offers students the unique opportunity to play high-quality instruments but also ensures that both Nesko and the fund can introduce themselves to each other’s loyal followings.

In addition, this initiative exposes young musicians to newly built instruments, which will hopefully inspire them to commission an instrument from a contemporary violin maker in the future. The instruments are returned via the maker. We hope that this will plant the first seed for a long-lasting relationship between musician and maker.

Painting in Sound

The theme of Nesko 2025 is “Painting with Sound.” The music forms a palette of styles and sounds in which every nuance is explored. In addition to musical diversity, Nesko is emphasizing inclusivity this year: the orchestra aims to be a place where everyone is welcome, both on stage and in the audience. Nesko aims to show that classical music is accessible to everyone. During the tour, Nesko—led by conductor Frans-Aert Burghgraef and featuring soloist SongHa Choi—will perform compositions by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Van Dun.
