Milestone

For the thousandth time since the Musical Instrument Fund was established in 1988, a musician has received an instrument from the Musical Instrument Fund. With this, the fund has reached a milestone in its history.

The 1,000th musician whom the Musical Instrument Fund has been able to help by providing a better musical instrument is 21-year-old double bassist Nienke Kosters. Nienke is a second-year student at the Amsterdam Conservatory, studying with Peter Stotijn, and will be performing with the NJO this summer. She belongs to the small group of bassists who fell in love with the instrument at the age of 9, according to Nienke. Her own simple bass, which she played until recently, was too small and, for that reason alone, lacked the qualities and power required at her level.

Consequently, the Musical Instrument Fund decided to have a suitable double bass built especially for her. The new double bass was recently crafted by Amsterdam-based double bass maker Harry Jansen, based on a Gagliano model.

The purchase was made possible in part by the Louisa van der Velden Foundation, which has supported the Musical Instrument Fund for many years, and by contributions from countless individuals.
