For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in stringed instruments and the relationship between the instrument and the musician. It’s fascinating to see how a piece of music comes to life through a fine instrument. When a musician gets their hands on a special instrument, you start to think about its history and the stories it has experienced. You can hear that reflected in their playing as well.

Ever since I was twelve, I’ve been captivated by a “virus”—not the kind that makes you sick, but a deep fascination with stringed instruments and the world surrounding them. I play the violin myself, enjoy reading about violinists and instrument makers, and visit instrument auctions and fairs. Through these experiences, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge that helps me in my work for The Netherlands Musical Instrument Foundation.
In my role, I support the Collections Department with various tasks. For example, I’m often the first point of contact for people considering donating their cherished instrument to the Foundation. I find this a special and rewarding responsibility. The strong, often emotional bond people have with their instruments makes every conversation unique. I enjoy guiding them through that next step and find great satisfaction in working together to find the right home for their instrument.
In addition to period instruments, I’m also fascinated by modern string instruments. Today, there’s much more information available to makers, which allows knowledge to be shared quickly. As a result, we’re experiencing a sort of renaissance in instrument making. All over the world, world-class string instruments are being crafted that are every bit as good as those made by the finest makers of the 17th and 18th centuries.
My Favorite Instrument
I’m a big fan of contemporary instruments. We’re currently experiencing a renaissance in violin making. Many instruments are being built, but the most important thing is that knowledge is being shared among colleagues.
Roger Hargrave is a prime example of this revival. Hargrave is one of the most respected living violin makers. He has conducted extensive research into the construction techniques of, for example, Guarneri “del Gesù,” and has applied this knowledge to his own style of violin making. He is incredibly skilled at replicating instruments, fooling both the ears and eyes of musicians and experts alike.
