Katie Yao Morgan

I am a classical pianist and psychology student living in Amsterdam.

I am Katie and I am half Chinese and half British. I graduated from the Yehudi Menuhin School with teacher Marcel Baudet in 2018 and am currently studying in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Teacher Frank Peters. I also study Psychology in the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

I have participated in competitions around Europe. In 2011 I was awarded second prize in Category B (12-16) section of the Pianist of the North Competition, and in 2014 ‘Mention of Honour’ in the International Piano Competition in Enschede, Holland. In 2016, I was awarded Diplôme de JEUNE ESPOIR in the 10th Adilia Alieva Competition held in Annemasse, France. In 2019 I won 1st prize at the Amsterdam Regional finals of the Princess Christina Concours in the Netherlands.

I have also in festivals such as The Wimbledon Festival and in duos at the Wigmore Hall. My orchestral performances includes, 2016 Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the Dorking Chamber Orchestra and in 2017 with the Mihail Jora” di Bacau Orchestra Filarmonica in Cantu, Italy.

I regularly take part in summer courses in Tignes, France and Blonay, Switzerland with teachers including Marcel Baudet, Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Edith Fischer and Jorge Pepi-Alos. I have also received masterclasses from Dmitri Alexeev, Ronald Brautigam, Ronan O’Hora, Idil Biret, Dominique Merlet.

I am a member of ‘Trio Pantoum’ with SongHa Choi (violin) and Maxim Calver (cello). The trio won 1st prize in the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Society Competition held in Birmingham Conservatoire in 2018. In February we also toured The Netherlands, performing in a number of venues including Akoesticum and the Conservatory in Amsterdam, also appearing on Dutch radio Spiegelzaal.

I have also recently appeared on Podium Witteman as part of the Jonge Helden.

I really love the Bechstein piano that the Foundation loaned to me. I now have the liberty to practice whenever and for as long as I would like to and I regularly practice with my trio on this instrument. It is a beautiful instrument, with a wide range of colours and a sensitive touch and I am very lucky to have the opportunity to have it in my room.
