Hi, I am Tiago Henriques. I am from Portugal and I came to The Netherlands in 2021, to study at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the class of Michel Strauss and Jan-Ype Nota.
I started playing cello when I was 9 years old in the “Academia de Musica de Óbidos” with the teacher Tiago Vila. In 2018, I joined the “Escola Profissional Metropolitana”, in Lisbon, studying cello with Ana Cláudia Serrão. Since 2021, I have been studying at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, where I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree with Michel Strauss and Jan-Ype Nota.
I have participated in several Masterclasses, in solo and chamber music with Catherine Strynckx, Luis Sá Pessoa, Kyril Zlotnikov, Filipe Quaresma, Jed Barahal, Paulo Gaio Lima, Maria de Macedo, Hugo Paiva, Thomas Carroll, Jorge Alves, Michel Strauss, Jan-Ype Nota, Petr Prause, Patrick Jüdt, Denis Prosaev, Peter Brunt as well as masterclasses from the members of the Cuarteto Casals. I also had lessons from:Roger Regter, Ernestine Stoop, Sylvain Blassel, Ásdís Valdimarsdóttir, Janet Krause.
Regarding orchestra playing, I have experience since high school, I have also played with the “Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa”, “Orquestra Académica Filármonica Portuguesa”, and “Nationaal Jeugdorkest”, which led me to work with conductors such as José Eduardo Poças Gomes, Henri Christofer Aavik, Ivan Meylemans, Leonard Evers, Kjell Seim and Antony Hermus.
In 2019 I received an honourable mention in Fundão International Competion. In 2021, I won the 1st prize in the Amac Vecchi-Costa competition, which led me to my first solo performance outside the school context. With Duo Tiaire, in 2024, we received the 2nd prize in the ensemble category in the Rosa Spier Harp Concours. 1st prize in the Prinses Christina Concours Regio Finale and 2nd prize in the Nationale Finale.
With Duo Tiaire, we have performed at the Grachten Festival and Muziekzomer Gelderland, exploring new repertoire and arranging works for cello and harp. I have also taken part in various projects, including performing Enescu’s Octet alongside Lisa Jacobs, Lech Uszynski, and Johannes Krebs, as well as performing with The String Soloists.
Besides the regular studies, I also have a passion for teaching, and did a minor in education under the guidance of Wiesje van Eersel. Also, I have an interest in exploring new music, which led me to have history of contemporary music composition subject.
Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds cello from Daniël Royé has been very important for my development as a cellist and to explore new sound.
