Major Steinway Overhaul
The narrower keyboard for pianist Hilda Huang also requires an overhaul of a Steinway grand piano from our collection, as the new action will be adapted to it and must therefore be future-proof. Donate now to support this overhaul and help build a smaller keyboard!

A smaller size
Hilda has small hands, which means that intensive practice on a standard keyboard can lead to strain and injuries. She therefore submitted a request for a modified keyboard with narrower keys. This innovative project was launched in March.

Additional costs
The narrower keyboard is being built into a Steinway from the collection of the Musical Instrument Fund. This magnificent Steinway A (188 cm) from Hamburg, built in 1999, was bequeathed to the fund in 2025.
During the first meeting between Atelier Chris Maene, Hilda, and Frits (head of the collection), the Steinway grand piano from Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds was thoroughly tested and evaluated. The action of the narrower keyboard will be fully and precisely tuned to this Steinway, so it should be future-proof. It turned out to be best to immediately upgrade the grand piano, which entails additional costs of €16,840.
As part of this process, the instrument will receive new strings, new tuning pins and agraffes, a thorough adjustment including cleaning, and new felt and pressure pads. The hammer heads and dampers will also be replaced.
Will you help us restore this Steinway to its full potential for future generations of musicians (with small hands)?
