Marthe Lasthuis

violin bow

My name is Marthe, and I’m a violinist. I’m active in the contemporary music scene and compose my own music under the name Honingbeer.

I studied classical violin with Lis Perry, Joyce Tan, and Natasja Morozowa at the Utrecht Conservatory and at Codarts. After completing my studies in 2015, I set out on my own path, focusing primarily on creating my own music and collaborating on contemporary music projects.

Honingbeer is my solo project, in which I combine violin and electronics. I create dreamy soundscapes blending various styles such as (post)minimal and ambient. I’ve previously released two EPs and performed at various festivals including Popronde, Le Guess Who, Uncloud, and internationally at Zermatt Unplugged. I’ve also had the pleasure of playing great shows at venues like Vera Groningen, EKKO, and Tivoli-Vredenburg in Utrecht, as well as at various venues in Berlin, where I signed a record deal in 2022 with Bigamo, the label run by renowned electronic musician Frank Wiedemann. In the media, my music has recently been played on BBC Radio, and I’ve performed sessions for VPRO’s *Vrije Geluiden* and *3voor12*.

My love for new music is expressed through T R O M P O, an ensemble I founded in 2018 with Carlos Anez (flute) and Laura Nygren (bass). T R O M P O represents the sound of today.  All three of us are classically trained and have joined forces based on a shared passion for (post)minimal and ambient music, creating beautiful and unusual sounds, and pushing the boundaries of our instruments. Young composers (mainly from the network of the American music festival Bang on a Can) from all over the world compose and have composed pieces especially for us. In addition, we design our own musical projects.

Thanks to the Musical Instrument Fund, I’ve been playing with a beautiful bow by Max Moller for years!
