When can you apply for an instrument from the NMF collection?
Everyone who plays an instrument knows that the quality of the instrument is vitally important for a musician’s personal development and for the maximal expression of one’s musicality. Unfortunately we lack the resources as a foundation to be able to help everybody. For this reason we set requirements concerning the level of playing and take the musician’s musical activities and personal financial circumstances into account. In this way we, the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation (NMF), are able to help those who will benefit the most.
The procedure starts by filling in and sending in an application form. Enclose to this the required attachments, such as a motivation, résumé, recommendation letters and a recording.
Once we have received your written application, you will be invited at our office for an introduction meeting with one of the collection managers. We find it very important to get acquainted personally with our candidates, and relevant information can be exchanged during that meeting.
After that, the Commission of Applications and Instruments (IC) will take your application into consideration during the next meeting. You will be informed of the decision in writing or by telephone.

The instrument collection consists of violins, violas, celli, double basses, harps, grand pianos, a fortepiano and bows. Modern and authentic instruments. So no wind instruments. Reason for that is the comparatively low purchase price and possibility for musicians to buy their own instrument with a loan of Cultuur-Ondernemen. In 01-01-2010 the NMF has joined forces with Cultuur-Ondernemen, where you can apply for a loan. For more information have a look at Cultuur-Ondernemen.
Special instruments available for projects
A bass clarinet, a contrabass clarinet, contrabass flute, a Treble Viol and a Basse de Violon, are an exception to the above. You can use these instruments for shorter projects. For more information, send an email to or call her on 020 6221255.
Besides ‘normal’ bows the NMF collection consists of two special bow collections:
- baroque bows
- classical bows
These bows can be used by individuals or ensembles/orchestras on a project base. For more information, send an email to or call her on 020 6221255.
